“…HCV-active screening of people born between 1969 and 1989; people who inject drugs (PWID), followed by addiction services; and inmates, independently of their age, has been funded by the Italian National Health System as the first key step to achieving the HCV-elimination in Italy [ 10 ]. Addressing first previous or active PWID, prisoners, as well as other at-risk populations (migrants, sex workers, and people having undergone risky nosocomial or esthetic procedures) [ 5 , 6 , 10 , 22 , 23 , 24 ] will give the possibility to identify HCV infected people in a sexually active age, often completely asymptomatic and without perception of the infectious risk and reduce the infection burden, limiting the infection spread and the progression to further disease stages [ 25 ]. Opportunistic screening for the younger population, is a rapid and efficient way to and cure HCV infection; however, this should not be the only way to reach younger populations, because people belonging to these populations are less likely to have hospital admission…”

“…Our study suggests that the additional preventive policy measures in homelessness services in Amsterdam may have resulted in limited COVID transmission among PEH, although the effect of having less contacts and a more solitary life than the general population could not be ruled out. Therefore, as COVID-19 continues to circulate around the world, emergency services for PEH should remain in place and vaccination uptake should be evaluated, in particular because PEH are regarded to be at increased risk of severe COVID-19 due to comorbidities (7,26), including infections such as hepatitis C (27), and because we found vaccination intention among PEH to be low.…”

“…Efforts to increase COVID-19 vaccine uptake should combine vaccination with education about and detection of other diseases like HCV 43 , 44 and HIV 45 , as well as the hepatitis B virus, and linkage to care, if needed, to maximise the use of each healthcare encounter and mitigate aforementioned factors that hinder disease screening, such as a lack of knowledge and mistrust in the health system 31 , 32 . With regards HCV testing in particular, resources could be further maximised by omitting HCV Ab screening and only testing for HCV-RNA in individuals with a known history of HCV, as those with a previous infection will continue to test HCV Ab+ 2 , which was evident in this study´s results.…”
