Ophthalmic Wearable Devices for Color Blindness Management

Abstract: Color vision deficiency (CVD) or color blindness is an ocular disorder that hinders the patients from distinguishing shades of certain colors. Color blind patients are often not considered for critical occupations (e.g., military, police) and cannot differentiate colors in public places or media (i.e., watching TV). The most common form of color blindness is red‐green, which is a result of either a missing or defective red or green photoreceptor cone. Since no cure for this disorder exists, sufferers opt for m… Show more

“…Enchroma and VINO glasses are some of the most widely used wearables by CVD patients, and their design and transmission blockage varies per the patient’s needs. 16 The transmission dip of Enchroma was far from that of the Atto dyed lens, the 12 and 40 nm gold nanocomposites. Indeed, Enchroma’s transmission dip was more than 30 nm away from that of the latter mentioned lenses.…”

“…The most common wearable is a form of tinted glass/lens. 16 , 17 Furthermore, the principle behind using the filters was introduced by Seebeck who claimed that when red and green filters are placed successively, protans and deutans are able to differentiate between shades of indistinguishable colors. 17 This was later developed into lenses and glasses by different companies; of these companies, Enchroma is the most well-known for providing tinted glasses.…”

“…However, the absorbance of the lens can be controlled by changing the dye concentration. [6,18,19] A double layer contact lens was fabricated utilizing both Atto dyes. The dyes were cross-linked in the double layer lens separately ( Figure 3e).…”

“…Accessibility of the colour blind ensures that only colour should not be a distinguishing feature for data perception. The works [17]- [20] focus on improving the accessibility of colour blind people. Wearables like the Enchroma glasses [21] support them to differentiate between different colours and such a wearable can assist them with a chart image too.…”
