Operating Experiences at VOC Treatment Facilities Part 1: GAC

Abstract: In a followup to a 1991 survey on 68 air stripping and granular activated carbon (GAC) treatment facilities in the US, the Organic Contaminants Control Committee of the AWWA Water Quality Division contacted each facility to obtain operating experiences and operation and maintenance costs associated with the use of these technologies. The committee's findings are summarized in this two‐part article. Part 1, which appears here, presents the finds regarding GAC facilities; part 2, which will appear in the Februar… Show more

“…Third, liquid loadings and volumetric A:W ratios were chosen to cover the range used in practice. A recent survey of existing air‐stripping applications, which were mostly used for TCE and PCE removal, reported that the liquid loadings ranged from 25 to 30 gpm/sq ft (17 to 20.4 L/m 2 /s) and the volumetric A:W ratio ranged from 25 to 50 (Dyksen et al, 1995). For a temperature of 10 °C , this yields a minimum stripping factor of ∼ 5.…”
