OpenMTC: Prototyping Machine Type communication in carrier grade operator networks

Abstract: The current trend in operator networking is towards supporting the communication of devices which do not require human intervention for information gathering, processing and exchange over the network, generically named Machine Type Communication (MTC). This paradigm aims to increase the level of system automation in which the devices and systems can exchange and share data, facilitating the communication for other industry branches resulting in new services such as smart cities, smart grids etc. This paper int… Show more

“…The heterogeneity of integrated communication technologies, targeted service domain, and data representation highlights the need to study the requirements of platforms required to enable the instrumented, interconnected, interoperated, and intelligent smart city. In our previous work [19,20], we address the requirements and design aspects of a reference M2M communication platform as an enabler for smart cities. In this section, we discuss the different infrastructure considerations to support M2M mobility and related standard work in this area.…”

“…In recent years, a large amount of Machine-to-Machine (M2M) gateways [36], [37], [38], [39] have been created, such as FIWARE 14 , OpenMTC 15 , OpenIoT [40], or GSN [41], [42]. These gateways serve as a layer between physical sensors and "virtual" sensor data.…”

“…It has been designed to act as a horizontal convergence layer supporting multiple vertical application domains, such as transport, utilities, automotive, eHealth, etc., which may be deployed independently or as part of a common platform [42]. As illustrated in Figure 6.1, the OpenMTC platform includes a connectivity management layer that controls the interaction between the front-end and back-end over unmanaged access, as well as over managed Access Networks.…”

“…In the course of the research for this dissertation, several related publications have been disseminated that present the work within the topic of interest: eight conference papers reecting the main contributions ( [42,43,5,32,45,46,40,39]), one book chapter ( [190]) and six conference papers about related elds of application in the context of Smart City services ( [24,31,35,29,38,176]), and seven joint papers with other research projects members ( [191,136,36,37,43,44,192] open research issues to be addressed for the realization of this device-tier interaction [194]. However, it shall bring signicant improvements in developing emergency applications and vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication.…”
