Opening of the National Biobank of Korea as the Infrastructure of Future Biomedical Science in Korea

Abstract: On April 26, 2012, the Korea National Institute of Health officially held the opening ceremony of newly dedicated biobank building, ‘NationalBiobank of Korea’. The stocked biospecimens and related information have been distributed for medical and public health researches. The Korea Biobank Project, which was initiated in 2008, constructed the Korea Biobank Network consisting of the National Biobank of Korea (NBK) with 17 regional biobanks in Korea. As of December 2011, a total of 525,416 biospecimens with rela… Show more

“…Specimens from 300,000 people have been collected by population-based cohorts established by the government, and the remaining specimens have been collected from 200,000 people who came to the university-affiliated hospitals [7]. In April 2012, the National Biobank of Korea opened its dedicated building, which means that a better infrastructure has been established for stable storage, management, and distribution of biospecimens for related researches (Figure 3) [8]. It has enough space to store biospecimens from 1,000,000 people (i.e., approximately 30 million vials).…”

“…In this issue, Cho et al have explained about the current status of the National Biobank of Korea, which was opened in April 30, 2012 [6], while Lee et al have described about the Korean Biobank Project, started in 2008, including the biobank’s quality assurance [7]. So far, a total of 89 papers were produced using the distributed human biospecimens, 76 of which are enlisted in SCI/SCIE journals [6].…”
