Open BIM-Based Information Modeling of Railway Bridges and its Application Concept

Abstract: As an initial stage study to effectively apply Building Information Modeling (BIM) to railway infrastructure, this study proposes measures of Industry Foundation Classes (IFC)-based information modeling of railroad bridge, which is a representative structure of railway infrastructure, and provides conceptual methods to utilize this measure. For this, firstly, IFC additional entity reflecting functional properties of the railroad bridge was suggested. Secondly, information modeling and management methods of rai… Show more

“…The former determines real or hypothetical flood discharge which is used as a reference for damage calculation, whereas the latter generates stream flow estimates and trends. Hence, these studies often employed simulations to predict and calculate discharges from rivers [10,55,103]. Other studies performed hydrodynamic and hydrologic analyses using a digital elevation map (DEM) to calculate flow direction, flow accumulation, catchment delineation, etc.…”

“…In fact, bridges have some unique characteristics such as road alignment or beam slopes that are of most importance in the design, construction, and fabrication of the bridge. An important number of publications [17,18] suggest methods to achieve substantial improvements in the design process, a sharp reduction of conflicts and even industrial benefits through use of BrIM. However, currently LOD faces an important challenge in infrastructure elements like bridges [19].…”

“…This application integrates BIM with the earned value concept to determine the project status at a specific reporting date. As an initial stage study to effectively apply BIM to railway infrastructure, Lee et al (2014) proposed measures of IFC-based information modeling of a railway bridge, which is a representative structure of railway infrastructure, and provided conceptual methods to use this measure. By analyzing the characteristics of bridge projects and associated problems, Liu et al (2014) developed a BIM-based solution for improving the design and construction and applied this solution to a real-life case.…”
