Oocyte Overripeness Relation to Multiple Pregnancy An Epidemiologic Study

Abstract: A total of 116 cases of multiple pregnancy has been observed in a 5-year period. MZ twin pregnancies appear to be significantly increased in the maternal age group 31-35. Also significant is the higher frequency of abnormal cycles in MZ twin pregnancies. Family incidence of twins is more significant in mothers of DZ as compared to MZ twins.

“…The increase of the DZ rate by maternal age is common to ali countries. Several explanations, including menopausal postponement [30], gonadotropin secretion [8,24], high coital rates [14], and overripeness of cocyte [25] have been proposed. Bothgenetic and environmental factors might be involved in the increase of MZ rates by maternal age.…”

“…Epidemiological studies demonstrate Ushaped ( Fig. 1) or J-shaped frequency curves related to the age of the mother for monozygotic twins (16,49), hydatidiform mole (46), spontaneous abortion (5,56,65), pre-eclamptic toxemia (9, 10), single umbilical artery (3), abruptio placentae (47), intra-uterine growth retardation (11,48,60), perinatal mortality (15,53,71), stillbirths and congenital anomalies (6,7,25,64,65), and intellectual impairment of children (41). A same U, or at least a J-shaped, curve may be presumed in patients with gonosomal as well as autosomal chromosome aberrations.…”
