Epidemiological Characteristics of Twinning Rates in Taiwan

Abstract: Delivery records of public hospitals and birth certificates of household registration offices were examined to study the epidemiological characteristics of twinning rate from 1955 to 1984 in Taiwan. The MZ twinning rate was consistently higer than the DZ rate during the study period. The DZ rate declined steadily from 2.7 per 1000 in 1955 to 1.3 per 1000 in 1975, and then gradually increased to 3.6 per 1000 in 1984. The MZ rate peaked periodically in 1956, 1966 and 1976, and gradually increased from 3.3 per 10… Show more

“…4 In urban populations of countries where assisted fertilization is not widespread, a decline in dizygotic twinning has been observed that was positively correlated with parity, independent of age. [5][6][7][8][9][10][11] With regard to the monozygotic twinning rate, most populations have shown stability of its incidence, but a few authors have observed a slight increase in monozygotic twin births. 1,2,[10][11][12][13] The rise in monozygotic twinning might be explained as a consequence of residual effects of long term use of oral contraceptives.…”

“…Thus, another cause influencing the increase in multiple births in these hospitals is maternal age, which is correlated with twinning, due to an increase of dizygotic pairs. [5][6][7][8][9][10][11] This paper had the objective of estimating the frequency of multiple births in a first-class tertiary private hospital in Brazil.…”

“…Both maternal age and parity affected the twinning rates in both populations; however, the effects were not additive without interaction between maternal age and parity (Picard et al, 1989). In Canada (Elwood, 1978) and Taiwan (Chen et al, 1987) increased twinning was noted with both maternal age and with the number of previous livebirths. In one study the higher the maternal age, the lower the twinning rates were, while the higher the parity, the higher the rates (Chen et al, 1992).…”

“…The relatively low participation rate was probably owing to the time-consuming nature of the oral glucose tolerance test, which lasts 120 minutes with an indwelling venous line. As monozygotic (MZ) twins are more common than dizygotic (DZ) twins in Taiwan (Chen et al, 1987), sibling pair families (n = 56; age variation within 2 years) from seven schools were also recruited to complement the number of DZ twins (Chen et al, 1999). In this study, all twins and sibling pairs were born and reared together in the same household.…”
