Oocyte in vitro maturation: A sytematic review

Abstract: In vitro maturation (IVM) is one of the most controversial aspects of assisted reproductive technology. Although it has been studied extensively, it is still not a conventional treatment option and is accepted as an alternative treatment. However, studies have shown that IVM can be used in almost all areas where in vitro fertilization (IVF) is used and it has a strong place in fertility protection and Ovarian Hyperstimulation syndrome management. The aim of this systematic review was to address all aspects of … Show more

“…In IVM procedures, oocytes are retrieved from small and intermediate sized follicles when the largest of the cohort has not yet surpassed 13 mm in diameter. These cumulus-enclosed oocytes are then matured in vitro prior to insemination by small dosage gonadotropin, with or without hCG [ 215 , 216 ].…”

“…To this end, immature germinal vesicle (GV; at the PI stage of first meiosis) oocytes are recovered from growing small follicles less than 14 mm in diameter following stimulated with rFSH or its analogs (Junk & Yeap, 2012). Then, GV oocytes undergo nuclear and cytoplasmic maturation to produce MII oocytes during routine IVM procedure (Hatirnaz et al, 2018). After obtaining MII oocytes from either conventional ARTs or IVM, the cumulus cells surrounding these oocytes can be removed by gentle pipetting to readily manipulate denuded oocytes during intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) application.…”

“…For example, this technique requires no or little gonadotropin supplementation in vivo , which can significantly reduce ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome risk, medical expenses and drug-related side effects [ 5 , 6 ]. Despite the great advances in oocyte IVM technique, there are still a lot of controversial issues that need to be addressed [ 7 ]. An in-depth understanding on cellular and molecular basis of oocyte IVM contributes to fertility protection, pregnancy rate improvement and the better management of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome and infertility.…”
