Fire is an abiotic disturbance that regulates vegetation structure and biodiversity. Some plant species have adapted to fi re prone environments by evolving protective structures. Acrocomia aculeata (macaw palm) is widely distributed throughout tropical America, and is found in environments continuously infl uenced by anthropogenic fi re. We aimed to determine whether the fruit characteristics of A. aculeata enable seeds to resist the eff ects of fi re and also the consequent eff ects of fi re on fruit biometric traits and embryo viability. After a fi re event in a region of pastureforest transition, we marked 30 individuals of A. aculeata. Th e trees were separated by UPGMA analysis into 5 groups according to fi re exposure, ranging from trees with no exposure to trees with fruit completely exposed to fi re. Fruit exposure to high temperatures led to lower values in fruit fresh weight, length, density, and processable mass.Fire had no signifi cant eff ect on seed biometric variables, because of the structures of the fruit, including its lignifi ed endocarp and its insulating and mucilaginous mesocarp. Th ese structures helped to maintain the embryos viability by preventing oxidative damage. In conclusion, the fruit structure of the macaw palm may facilitate seed persistence, even when subject to increasingly frequent fi re events.

Acrocomia spp., a genus of wild-growing palms in the neotropics, is rapidly gaining interest as a promising multipurpose crop. Diverse products can be derived from various components of the palm, the oils being of highest interest. Acrocomia shows similar oil yield and fatty acid composition to the African oil palm (Elaeis guineensis). It is, however, able to cope with a wider range of environmental conditions, including temporary water scarcity and lower temperatures, thus potentially a more sustainable alternative to its tropical counterpart. Acrocomia’s research history is recent compared to other traditional crops and thus knowledge gaps, uncertainty, and challenges need to be addressed. This review attempts to assess the acrocomia’s preparedness for cultivation by highlighting the state-of-the-art in research and identifying research gaps. Based on a systematic literature search following a value web approach, it (a) provides a comprehensive overview of research topics, (b) shows the development of publication activities over time and the drivers of this development, and (c) compiles main findings to assess the acrocomia’s preparedness for commercial cultivation. Our results confirm its multipurpose characteristic as a potential feedstock for manifold sectors. Research has continued to increase over the last decade, especially on A. aculeata and is driven by the interest in bioenergy. Increasing knowledge on botany has contributed to understanding the genetic diversity and genus-specific biology. This has enabled applied research on seed germination and propagation toward domestication and initial plantation activities, mostly in Brazil. Main research gaps are associated with genotype–environment interaction, planting material, crop management, and sustainable cropping systems. Overall, we conclude that acrocomia is at an early phase of development as an alternative and multipurpose crop and its up-scaling requires the integration of sustainability strategies tailored to location-based social-ecological conditions.

Seeds of several palms are reserve-rich, and have a complex and poorly understood mobilization. The massive endosperm and embryo of Acrocomia aculeata Lodd. ex Mart. possess large amounts of proteins, polysaccharides, and lipids. We evaluated cell features related to reserve mobilization during germination and initial development of seedlings of A. aculeata. Samples of the haustorium (the cotyledonary blade) at different developmental stages and of the entire digestion zone of the endosperm were processed by standard methods for ultrastructural evaluation. The haustorium reserve mobilization begins when germination starts, and proteins are the first to be metabolized, followed by polysaccharides and lipids. Haustorial cells present lipid bodies associated with glyoxysomes and protein vacuoles, which are involved in lipid mobilization. The digestion zone of the endosperm comprises cell layers adjacent to the haustorium, in which reserve mobilization begins after the protrusion of the cotyledonary petiole. The endosperm reserve mobilization is similar to observed in the haustorium, firstly proteins, polysaccharides, and lipids in the end. The abundant carbohydrates in the cell walls of endosperm are hydrolyzed, and the cells lose integrity, while digestion products accumulate around the haustorium. The sinuosities observed in the plasma membrane and the organelles predominating in the epidermal cells of the haustorium are consistent with absorption and transitory storage of reserves, and there is no evidence of the secretion of enzymes that can act in the mobilization of endosperm reserves. Therefore, the endosperm has a storage and self-degradation function, and the products of hydrolysis are transported towards the haustorium via the apoplastic route.
