Ultrastructural aspects of metabolic pathways and translocation routes during mobilization of seed reserves in Acrocomia aculeata (Arecaceae)

Abstract: Seeds of several palms are reserve-rich, and have a complex and poorly understood mobilization. The massive endosperm and embryo of Acrocomia aculeata Lodd. ex Mart. possess large amounts of proteins, polysaccharides, and lipids. We evaluated cell features related to reserve mobilization during germination and initial development of seedlings of A. aculeata. Samples of the haustorium (the cotyledonary blade) at different developmental stages and of the entire digestion zone of the endosperm were processed by s… Show more

“…Germination is initiated by increasing the moisture content of grain or seeds to 43% to 45% by soaking in water [ 31 ]. Upon the initiation of germination, enzyme synthesis and kernel modification take place, and the seeds rapidly undergo metabolic activities that include respiration, nutrient degradation and secondary metabolite synthesis [ 32 , 33 ]. Several studies have investigated the effects of germination on the TPC, AA and phenolics composition of buckwheat seeds [ 34 , 35 ].…”

“…It has been reported that the liquid endosperm (coconut water) is broken down first to supply the energy and then the solid endosperm breaks down [ 62 , 63 ]. Mazzottini-dos-Santos, et al [ 64 ] studied the role of the haustorium in the macaw palm ( Acrocomia aculeata (Jacq.) Lodd.…”

“…In the second most cited article, authored by Ribeiro, L.M., 43 citations, published in 2012, the collaborators examined the morphology and anatomy of macaúba's embryos and seedlings in vitro germination. Ribeiro's production was related to macaúba's seed, structure, germination, pretreatments, storage conditions and reserve mobilization [68][69][70][71][72][73][74][75][76][77][78][79][80][81][82][83]. Considering the potential use of macaúba for biodiesel, it will be necessary to accomplish commercial scale plantations, which are currently limited by difficulties related to the plant propagation.…”
