Onset of Breast and Pubic Hair Development and Menses in Urban Chinese Girls

Abstract: These data suggest that urban Chinese girls are actually experiencing earlier breast development than currently used norms. The up-to-date reference for normal pubertal development in urban Chinese girls needs to be established for the purpose of determining precocious puberty or pubertal delay.

“…From the 1960s, this decline in AAM in the USA and in Europe seems to have leveled off, although minor but statistically significant decreases of 2.5-4 months have been reported during the past three decades [8]. Moreover, the pattern described in our study is more comparable to the one observed in developing countries [16,17,18,19] in which there appears to be a decline in mean AAM in the second half of the 20th century. However, the decline reported in the present study seems to be less steep than observed in these populations, beginning at a lower AAM in the late 1800s and early 1900s than reported in developing countries or in developed countries.…”

“…Several reports from the USA and Europe described a decrease in AAM of 2.5-4 months in the last quarter of a century [7,8]. In contrast, during similar periods a dramatic decrease in AAM was reported in cross-sectional studies from developing areas in China [16], Mexico [17], South Africa [18] and Korea [19]. …”

“…The secular trend to earlier pubertal maturation was observed especially in girls [5][6][7][8], possibly because of improved nutrition and increased socioeconomic status that corresponded with the markedly increased prevalence of obesity in Thai school children in the recent years [9]. In girls, earlier age at menarche was reported after exposure to many endocrine disrupters such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated biphenyls, pesticides-dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT), and phthalate esters.…”

“…However, a minority (10-18.4%) may progress to true precocious puberty with a positive association between older age at presentation (mostly after 2 years of age) and the progression to precocious puberty [40]. There is a secular trend towards an increasing prevalence of premature puberty, especially early breast development in school-aged girls [41,42]. This trend has been attributed to in utero and childhood exposure to endocrine-disrupting compounds ubiquitously present in food and the environment [43,44].…”
