This article investigates the impact of WhatsApp language on English as a Second Language (ESL) learners’ writing performance. The study is based on the assumption that secondary schools learners’ essay scripts are full of orthographic errors caused by the use of WhatsApp language. Data collection tools included questionnaires and learners essays. The descriptive survey design within the social learning theory and the constructivist theory of error analysis was adopted in the analysis of data. The study concluded that WhatsApp language negatively affects the orthographic performance of the Government Bilingual High School ESL students of Bertoua. The way forward proposes the development of teachers’ skills in error analysis as well as the active involvement of learners in reflecting on the source of their errors as part of the remediation process.

Social Media is part and parcel of our everyday lives. And since millennials have been interacting on social media on a constant basis, writing is one of the skills by means of which they interact. The intent of this paper is to measure students' social media usage and explore the relationship between these technologies and writing ability among Moroccan university EFL students. In particular, this study employs the explanatory sequential mixed-methods design as a means of researching the reciprocity between social media use and its effects on the writing skill. The findings have indicated that Moroccan university students' social media use habits exert significant impacts on the writing skill and that most of them are susceptible to potential risks pertaining to the use of social media. The reported findings gave sufficient proof that social media is a convenient tool to develop better writing skills. Hence, social media literacy should be integrated in the curriculum.

Facebook is widely claimed to have an important influence on students' writing skills, but studies on its impact on students' descriptive writing skills, especially in the first grade, are still very limited by previous researchers. Because of the scarcity of studies, this study attempts to measure the effect of social media Facebook on the descriptive writing skills of first-year students. 35 students from the Indonesian Language and Literature Education Study Program aged between 16-18 years were involved in this study as research subjects. They were selected after taking the Indonesian Language Competency Test (UKBI) and the range of scores obtained was high (75-79.9%). Non-random sampling was used to select research subjects. This study used a one group pretest-posttest experimental design. The data in this study were obtained from pretest and posttest activities using a descriptive writing skill test instrument. Data analysis was carried out using SPSS for Windows version 25. The results of this study indicate that the average score of students before the Facebook social media intervention was 61.43 and after the intervention, the average score obtained was 83.03. Meanwhile, based on the one-sample t-test, it shows that Facebook has a significant effect on students' description writing skills. The implication of the findings of this study is that Facebook is a social media that can be an ideal and comfortable learning tool that can lead students to develop better descriptive writing skills in higher education.
