PurposeThere is a significant decrease in students' attendance in Zoom classes compared to traditional classes. This paper investigates the factors that affect students' attitudes, behavioral intentions and actual use of Zoom for online classes at higher educational institutions (HEIs) in Sri Lanka.Design/methodology/approachThis research uses the technology acceptance model (TAM) as a theoretical model. The data are collected from HEI students via an online survey form. The hypotheses between constructs in the model are tested using partial least squared–structural equation model.FindingsThe analysis shows that computer self-efficacy (CSE) affects perceived usefulness (PU) and perceived ease of use (PEU), which affects attitude (ATT) and behavioral intention (BI) and actual use (AU) of Zoom in a chain reaction. Further, PEU affects PU, which, in turn, affects BI. Furthermore, the effect size of PU to BI is larger than ATT to BI.Practical implicationsStudents' attendance for Zoom classes mainly depends on CSE, PU and PEU. Therefore, HEIs should promote Zoom with interactive training before teaching online. Further, officials should revise the curriculum in schools to upsurge the CSE of students.Originality/valueDuring coronavirus-19, no research was published on students' use of Zoom for online classes in the Sri Lankan context. Moreover, the TAM model has been modified by including CSE as an external variable.

Recently, incorporating technology in English as a foreign language (EFL) courses has been the topic of much debate. Technology can facilitate student interaction in the learning process and create an interactive and communicative classroom environment. Zoom is a solution for faculty members to engage and motivate students in virtual courses as it provides real interaction and direct feedback. This present study aimed to explore EFL students' perceptions as well as attitudes toward synchronous learning through Zoom Videoconferencing. The participants were 72 undergraduate students in the Intensive Reading course. The data was collected through questionnaires, observations, and interviews. The contents of the instrument were validated using expert judgment. The quantitative data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics while qualitative data were analyzed using thematic coding. The findings demonstrated that students had positive perceptions of Zoom videoconferencing in terms of actual use, perceived ease of use, intrinsic motivation, behavioral intention, and attitude. Further research into using Zoom videoconferencing to develop innovations in an online course is strongly recommended.

The purpose of this study was to find out the students’ attitude in Online English learning using zoom at fifth semester of English education study program in UIN Sjech M. Djamil Djambek Bukittinggi. This study used a quantitative approach with a survey design. The population of this study were the students of English education study program at fifth semester academic year 2021/2022, consisting of 127 students from 4 classes. The researcher used simple random sampling technique because the population in this study was more than one hundred so sample in this study was 25% or 32 students. In collecting the data, the researcher used an instrument in the form of a questionnaire.The results of this research related to students' attitude in online English learning using zoom at the fifth semester of English education study program in UIN Bukitinggi academic year 2021/2022 show that some of students had negative and positive attitudes. Based on the findings, the negative attitude that students generally did was turned off the zoom camera when did other activities during English class using zoom with a percentage of 100%. Sometimes most of them felt sleepy while learning English using zoom with a percentage of 90.6%. Besides, they were also had positive attitude such as they liked to speak English in English class on zoom with percentage of 62.5%. So, in general indicated that the students of English education study program at fifth semester academic year 2021/2022 in UIN Sjech M. Djamil Djambek Bukittinggi had negative attitude in learning English online using zoom.
