The study explores the effects of different parenting styles on online gaming addiction (OGA) and online shopping addiction (OSA) in this digital age. The objective of this study is to investigate other parenting issues that may affect these addictions besides parenting styles and examine the correlations among different parenting styles on these addictions which go viral under the prevalence of digital lifestyle. Based on the four Baumrind parenting styles, this study reviewed a number of research on the effects of OGA and OSA and revealed that there are more parenting styles identified as times change. It also found that positive parenting style is not always significant and may act as negative factor to induce smartphone addiction while acting as a positive factor against OGA. Furthermore, children with special needs like autism should be considered when evaluating the significance of the effects of different parenting styles. This study contributed to the available literature by adding three variables: parenting stress, hours spent online and the gender differences in perceiving different internet parenting styles which may affect the tendency of the onset of OGA and OSA and their interventions.

Among the sub-categories of assessment types, alternative assessment including peer-assessment helps students develop metacognition. The reliability and validity issues are the most significant problem in peer-assessment. Furthermore, the studies focusing on rater bias in peer review are limited. This study investigated the rater severity drift, which is one of the rater effects, in peer-assessment. The performance of 8 oral presentations based on group work in Science and Technology course was scored by 7th grade students (N=28) by using the rubric that researchers developed. The presentations lasted for four days with two presentations in each day. While examining the time-dependent drift in rater severity in peer-assessment, the many-Facet Rasch Measurement model was used. Two indexes (interaction term and standardized differences) were calculated with many-Facet Rasch Measurement with an aim to determine whether the raters made rater severity drift on a group or an individual basis. The analysis examined the variance of scores in following days in comparison with the scores of the 1st day. Accordingly, the two methods used to determine rater severity shift gave similar results, and some raters at the individual level tended to be more strict or lenient over time although there was no significant rater drift at the group level, showing that drifts had no specific models.

IntroductionAdolescence is a sensitive transitional period accompanied by great physical, mental, and behavioral changes. Therefore, maintaining physical and mental health is crucial to the growth and development of adolescents. As one of the important indicators of mental health, the influencing factors of life satisfaction have been widely concerned by scholars. In recent years, with the rapid development of Internet technology, mobile social media has penetrated into all aspects of adolescents’ life, which has a subtle impact on their physical and mental health. Existing studies have indicated that mobile social media use can affect adolescents’ life satisfaction. However, little is known about the mediating and moderating mechanisms linking this association. This study developed a moderated mediation model to examine the mediating role of meaning in life and the moderating role of childhood psychological maltreatment.MethodsA total of 1,198 adolescents across four provinces and municipalities of China completed questionnaires on mobile social media use, life satisfaction, meaning in life, and childhood psychological maltreatment.ResultsAfter controlling for gender and age, the results demonstrated that mobile social media use was positively associated with life satisfaction and meaning in life among adolescents. Moreover, meaning in life fully mediated the association between mobile social media use and life satisfaction. Finally, the association between mobile social media use and life satisfaction, as well as that between mobile social media use and meaning in life, was moderated by childhood psychological maltreatment. Specifically, these associations are stronger for adolescents with high levels of psychological maltreatment.DiscussionThese findings shed light on the important mechanism underlying mobile social media use’s effects on adolescents’ life satisfaction, which is helpful to formulate targeted measures for improving adolescents’ life satisfaction.
