One year of African swine fever outbreak in China

Abstract: Background: African swine fever (ASF) is a major threat to domestic pigs and wild boars. Since 2018, ASF outbreak has been ongoing in China. As of August 3, 2019, a total of 151 ASF outbreaks reported in China have caused severe economic losses for many pig farmers and pork producers. The present study is to analyze the epidemiologic characteristics of ASF outbreak that occurred in several regions across China during the period August 2018-August 2019. Particularly focusing on the epidemic distribution, main t… Show more

“…Sick pigs, as well as those that have been exposed to the virus, are often culled to reduce spread ( 63 ) and mitigate financial loss. Also, because of the uncertainty created following outbreaks, producers may be reluctant to increase their pig numbers ( 64 ). The result is a reduction in the amount of pork on the market and subsequently, an increase in price.…”

“…Africa can learn a lot from approaches used to contain the disease in other countries. China issued several policies and regulations to prevent and control ASF outbreaks ( 64 ). This included establishing more stringent surveillance programs and the need to meet legal requirements relating to biosecurity.…”

“…Until now, there are no commercial vaccines and antiviral drugs available for ASF control. Therefore, the spread of ASF poses great economic losses to the pig industry and the ecosystems in the affected countries [ 2 ]. ASF virus (ASFV) is the etiological agent of the disease, and it is an enveloped, icosahedral, double-stranded DNA virus with a genome length ranging from 170 to 193 kb.…”

“…On the other hand, none of the reports detected any ASFV positive sample in the field. Since the first outbreak of ASF in August, 2018 in China, it spread throughout the country in a very short time [ 19 20 ]. Currently, ASFV, CSFV, and PRRSV are simultaneously prevalent in many regions of China [ 21 22 ].…”
