One-step synthesis of AlN branched nanostructures by an improved DC arc discharge plasma method

Abstract: Aluminium nitride (AlN) branched nanostructures with tree shapes and sea urchin shapes are synthesized via a one-step improved DC arc discharge plasma method without any catalyst and template. The branched nanostructures with tree shapes and sea urchin shapes can be easily controlled by the location of collection. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) studies show that the branches of tree shaped nanostructures grow in a sequence of nanowires, nanomultipeds and nanoc… Show more

“… 254 3D NSMs have a large specific surface area and other superior properties over their bulk counterparts arising from the quantum size effect, e.g. nanoballs, 255 nanocoils, 256 nanocones, nanopillars 257 and nanoflowers 258 ( Fig. 17 ).…”

“…These nanostructures can be classified as 3D (1) and partially 3D(2) structures, as the building element can be 1D nanoneedles or 2D nano-daggers. Urchin-like AlN structures were also produced through the DC arc plasma technique using aluminium metal and nitrogen gas [133,134]. Even in this case, nanoneedles and nano-daggers were the building elements for the production of sphere-type urchinshaped structures (Figure 5(B, d)) [133].…”
