One-step hydrothermal synthesis of ordered mesostructured carbonaceous monoliths with hierarchical porosities

Abstract: Hierarchical carbonaceous monoliths with ordered 2-D hexagonal mesostructures have been successfully synthesized by using phenolic resols as precursors and mixed triblock copolymers as templates via a one-step hydrothermal approach.

“…49,50 Noticeably, our monolith shows a much larger total pore volume and macropore size than those of phenolicbased mesoporous carbons (total pore volume 1.14 cm 3 g À1 and macropore size 3 μm). 51 The SEM image (Figure 1e) confirms that carbon monolith HCM-DAH-1 exhibits fully interconnected macroporosity and a robust sponge-like branched skeleton. This is consistent with the Hg intrusion analysis.…”

“…Surprisingly, HCM-DAH-1 can bear a load of 15.6 MPa, which is 80 times greater than that reported for a nanocast carbon monolith (27.9 psi, 0.19 MPa) 54 and the recently soft-templated carbon monolith (0.2 MPa). 51 Evidently, our newly developed carbon monolith possesses several salient features such as hierarchical and fully interconnected macropores and mesopores and high mechanical strength, and can be facilely prepared in a time-saving manner.…”

“…Nevertheless, the sample impregnated with resol shows higher compressive stress at comparable deformations [15] indicating that impregnation with resol increases the stiffness of the foam. The mechanical strength of the carbon foams obtained in this work are lower than those obtained from bulk resol monoliths [16], but this is expected because the carbon foams presented here have macropores several orders of magnitude greater than carbon monoliths prepared from bulk resol monoliths. Also, carbon xerogel and aerogel pellets obtained from resol displayed a much higher compressive strength, although no macroporosity was present in those cases [17].…”
