One-step grafting of polymers to graphene oxide

Abstract: The direct grafting of poly(-isopropylacrylamide) to the basal plane of graphene oxide has been achieved in a single step: cleavage of the terminal thiocarbonylthio group on RAFT grown poly(-isopropylacrylamide) reveals a reactive thiol that attacks the epoxides present across the surface of graphene oxide. The new composite material was characterised by a combination of SSNMR, FTIR, Raman, EDX, XPS, TGA and contact angle measurement; it shows enhanced thermal stability and solubility in water.

“…From the C 1 s spectra, the peak obtained at 288.82 eV (O─C═O), 286.79 eV (C═O) and that due to the SP 2 carbon atom (284.46 eV) confirms the formation of GO from graphite (Fig. ) . The same peak is obtained for GO‐ g ‐PEG.…”

“…In general, two kinds of regions are non‐uniformly distributed in GOs, namely aromatic regions with unoxidized sp 2 ‐bonded benzene rings and oxidized regions decorated by highly reactive oxygenated moieties. The oxygen‐based functional groups are handles for further chemical modification and interfacing with other materials . However, the structure of GOs has remained elusive for decades, and their composition has been under considerable debate.…”

“…Although 13 C‐enrichment and multidimensional NMR spectroscopy are extremely powerful to reveal the detailed structure of GOs, standard 1D spectra are certainly useful to verify the synthetic route of functionalized materials and to monitor reduction processes . For example, Rourke and co‐workers studied the direct grafting of a series of well‐defined water‐soluble poly( N ‐isopropylacrylamide) polymers with GO. 13 C NMR spectra showed a decrease in the intensity of the epoxide carbons and therefore confirmed the reaction on these epoxide sites.…”

“…Both elements are prevalent in the polymer, cross‐linker, and the analyte. Meanwhile, two other smaller peaks have been detected at 400 and 401.5 eV; the former corresponds to the amide functional groups of the cross‐linker while the latter is assigned to the quaternary ammonium functionalites due to adsorbed TBAH supporting electrolyte. Figure C shows a highly intense oxygen 1s peak in between 530 and 536 eV, which can be attributed to the presence of the cross‐linker and morphine imprint molecule in the polymer film.…”
