One-pot, aqueous-phase synthesis of graphene oxide functionalized with heterocyclic groups to give increased solubility in organic solvents

Abstract: An easy and versatile method for the covalent functionalization of graphene oxide (GO) is reported. The functionalized GO is synthesized by a polyphosphoric acid-catalyzed cyclization reaction of the carboxylic groups on GO with the hydroxyl and amino groups on o-aminophenol and o-phenylenediamine, resulting in it being well dispersed in many organic solvents. The results may provide a way to extend the use of GO as a functional material in electronic devices and high performance structural materials.

“…However, I D / I G (the Raman intensity ratio of D and G bands) is a little different. Compared with GO (1.10), MoO 2 –salen–GO gives a slightly high ratio of I D / I G (1.13), indicating that the size of the in‐plane sp 2 domains decreases and the covalent attachment of dioxomolybdenum(VI) salen to GO by a stepwise procedure causes some defects or deoxygenation …”

“…The peak at 10.8°corresponds to the (001) plane with an interlayer distance of 8.18 Å , which is due to the presence of functional groups on the graphene sheets. A (002) peak at 25.8°indicates that restacking of the graphene due to functionalization process [35]. For q-graphene, the (001) peak of the larger interlayer distance disappeared completely and only the abroad (002) peak at 26°, which corresponds to an interlayer distance of 8.18 Å are observed.…”
