On the use of IEC 61850-90-7 for Smart Inverters Integration

Abstract: Currently, there is a big correlation between the exponential technological development (verified in the last decades) and the increasing energy dependence in industrial and residential environments. A growing number of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) led the utility operators to explore new methods of network planning and management. New approaches and concepts have emerged, such as the smart grid, showing exciting results in increasing the hosting capacity for DERs and Renewable Energy Sources (RES). Sta… Show more

“…The implementation of the IEC 61850 GOOSE (Generic Object-Oriented Substation Event) and the Manufacturing Message Specification (MMS) allows for a simple way to implement control actions in power electronic converters and so many other technologies. There are very well documented experiences regarding the use of IEC TR 61850-90-7 and UL 1741 standards in the development of the control of the so-called smart PV inverters [28].…”

“…According to [13,14] and following IEC 61850-90-7 standard, the volt-var function can be managed by either autonomous DER units responding to local conditions or broadcasted from a centralized power system provider with the ability to understand the capacities of each DER. While a centralized control concentrates the processing capabilities in one high computational equipment, local control can work whenever there are communication problems with the centralized system [15].…”

“…In [10], it is proved its effectiveness in front other techniques. Following the standard IEC 61850-90-7 and as it is mentioned in [11] and [12] the Volt-VAr function can be managed by either an autonomous DER unit itself responding to local conditions or broadcasted from a centralized power system provider with the ability to understand the capacities of each individual DER. Meanwhile a centralized control can gather the processing capabilities in a central equipment, a local control is able to work when there is communication problem with the centralized system.…”
