This research aims to investigate the effect of the exfoliation corrosion exposure time on the mechanical properties, the strength and elongation, of friction stir welded Al-Li alloy type 2195-T8. The exfoliation corrosion test was performed using the exfoliation corrosion (EXCO) solution, based on ASTM G34. The samples were exposed to different exposure times 24,48, 96, 192 and 384 h. The results showed that both the strength and elongation of the welded specimens-exposed to the exfoliation corrosion tests-were reduced. For example, the samples that were exposed to 384 h, their initial tensile strength and elongation were reduced by 13% and 17% respectively. The degradation process due to the exfoliation corrosion on the tensile strength was divided into three stages: fast (0-96 h: 443.7 MPa-416.3 MPa, the degraded rate was 0.29 MPa/h), steady (96-192 h: 416.3 MPa-413.4 MPa, the degraded rate was 0.03 MPa h −1 ) and medium rate MPa, the degraded rate was 0.14 MPa h −1 ). For the elongation, in general, the reduction was similar to the style of strength, but with different rates. The TEM images showed that this degradation was due to the dissolution of T 1 (Al 2 CuLi) and S′ (Al 2 CuMg) phase. Also, the corrosion products and their role of adherence on the surface of the tested specimens were investigated. An empirical equation p-t (mechanical properties-exposure time) was established to calculate the effect of exposure corrosion time on the performance of welded specimens.

In this work, the effect of eight types of surface treatments on the corrosion resistance of friction stir welded samples of an AA2198‐T8 Al‐Cu‐Li alloy were tested and compared in an attempt to find suitable alternatives to toxic and carcinogenic hexavalent chromium treatments. All the samples were anodized and subjected to different post‐anodizing treatments. The post‐anodizing treatments were (1) hydrothermal treatment in Ce (NO3)3 6H2O solution; (2) hydrothermal treatment in Ce (NO3)3 6H2O solution with H2O2; (3) hydrothermal treatment in boiling water; (4) hexavalent chromium conversion coating; and (5) immersion in BTSE (bis‐1,2‐(triethoxysilyl) ethane. The corrosion resistance of the treated samples was evaluated by immersion tests in sodium chloride solution (0.1 mol L−1 NaCl) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) of the friction stir weldment. The results showed that among the alternative treatments, the Ce‐containing solutions presented the best corrosion resistance, especially when used without peroxide.

Al–Li alloys have higher mechanical properties and are more lightweight than pure aluminum and other aluminum alloys. The element lithium is highly active; therefore, it is necessary to evaluate corrosion behaviors of Al–Li alloys. However, the existed methods and indicators that compare their corrosion properties are hard to characterize the continuous variations of corrosion performances with time. The potentiostatic polarization measurement is first proposed to compare corrosion resistances of Al, Al–Li alloy 2A97, and Al alloys 2024, 6061, 7050 in this study. Polarization current densities of these materials are measured. Then, equivalent resistances and charges amounts are respectively derived by Ohm's law and integration. Mass losses of these materials are calculated with Faraday's law. Measured current densities and three derived indicators above are applied to compare corrosion behaviors of these materials. Comparative results indicate that alloy 2A97 possesses the best corrosion property at the initial corrosion stage. During steady corrosion processes, the corrosion resistance of alloy 2A97 is better than those of alloys 2024, 6061, and Al except alloy 7050.
