On the role of the ντ appearance in DUNE in constraining standard neutrino physics and beyond

Abstract: We consider the ν µ → ν τ appearance channel in the future Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) which offers a good statistics of the ν τ sample. In order to measure its impact on constraining the oscillation parameters, we consider several assumptions on the efficiency for ν τ charged-current signal events (with subsequent τ → e decay) and the related backgrounds and study the effects of various systematic uncertainties. Two different neutrino fluxes have been considered, namely a CP-violation optimize… Show more

“…Ultimately, several physics analyses could benefit from applying our tool chain with realistic detector effects and a treatment of systematic uncertainties. Amongst those are ν τ -nucleus interaction measurements [6,21]; violations of unitarity in the leptonic mixing matrix [23,25,[48][49][50]; nonstandard neutrinos interactions in neutrino production, detection and propagation [51]; sterile neutrino searches [52][53][54][55]; and general consistency tests of the three neutrino oscillation paradigm [24,28]. In our work we demonstrate that the tau-optimized beam significantly enhances the prospects of tau neutrino measurements at DUNE.…”

“…This possibility has been recently discussed in Ref. [291,292]. If neutrinos are quasi-Dirac particles, β P αβ < 1, with β = {e, µ, τ }.…”

“…Simulations involving Hyper-Kamiokande were also considered, mostly in the context of elucidating the nature of the new phenomenon that manifested itself in long-baseline oscillations. The cases studies revolved around different concrete scenarios: the fourth neutrino hypothesis [256], non-standard neutrino interactions [257], and the possibility that neutrino and antineutrino oscillation parameters are different [258,260]. The studies addressed three broad questions:…”
