On the road to potato processing in African tropical highlands.

Abstract: Potato processing at the industrial level is relatively insignificant in the tropical highlands of Africa in Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda. No large international companies are present in this area whereas they have successfully established themselves in North Africa (Egypt) and South Africa. The reason for the presence of large French fries (chips) and crisps factories in northern and southern Africa is the availability of growers who have relatively large areas of irrigated land assuring a year-round fl… Show more

“…Regarding gender differences in the adoption of varieties, there is a single reference in Walker & Alwang (2015: 178) related to the preference of semi‐subsistence producers, and especially women growers, for the Cruza 148 potato variety. This preference was due to Cruza 148’s tolerance to bacterial wilt and late blight, very short dormancy and high yields under most conditions, despite the fact that traders and consumers tended to discount this variety because of a blue ring in its flesh (Haverkort et al ., 2015; Labarta, 2015).…”

“…Farmers often obtain knowledge regarding seed quality and management practices informally as well. One step toward ensuring the food and income security of smallholders in the potato farming systems could be greater involvement of key system stakeholders to support the quality and health of seed potato (Beyene, 2010;Carvajal-Yepes et al, 2019;Damtew et al, 2018;Haverkort et al, 2012).…”

“…Besides its market advantages, the crop possesses favorable characteristics of short growing period and suitability for semiarid climate (Beshah, 2015). Similarly, potato is one of the fastest expanding crops in the country owing to its nutritional advantage, increasing local demand and short growing season (Emana and Nigussie, 2011; Haverkort et al , 2012).…”
