This research examines anthropomorphism by testing the values that people attribute to electronic devices. We ask four main questions: Do people attribute human values to devices; Do devices differ in their value profiles; What underlies the attribution of values to devices; and Do individual and social differences affect these attributions. In Study 1, participants ( N = 265) attributed Schwartz’s 10 basic human values to devices, reported their personal value priorities, as well as the frequency and difficulty in using each device. In Study 2, participants ( N = 231) attributed values to devices, and responses were analyzed by age. Results show that people attribute human values to electronic devices, and that each device has a unique value profile. Anthropomorphizing devices reflects social consensus as to the symbolic meaning of each device, rather than projection of personal values or frequency of device use. Members of social groups share device values and differ from members of other groups.

The Authoritarian Predisposition, Perceived Threat, and Trust in Political Institutions

The more authoritarian an individual, the more socio-culturally conservative their attitudes and the more they yield to authority. The more authoritarian should, therefore, be more supportive of political institutions than their more libertarian counterparts. Building on recent research, I further hypothesize that differences across authoritarianism in support for political institutions will narrow among those who perceive greater threat. Utilizing data from the World Values Survey, I conduct a series of multilevel analyses examining the relationship between authoritarianism and confidence in the armed forces, police, parliament, government, and courts, conditional on perceived threat. The results demonstrate the more authoritarian are more trusting of political institutions and this relationship is, for some institutions, conditional on perceived threat. These findings add to our understanding of how values orientations can affect individual trust in government institutions and why support for more aggressive solutions to societal problems may dominate when perceived threat becomes more commonplace.

El presente paper busca enriquecer la gestión del conocimiento alentando procesos culturales que integren los valores humanos laborales a los de las organizaciones empresarias. El objetivo es describir los valores laborales de los trabajadores de América Latina, indagando específicamente la diferencia entre los valores declarados y los realmente priorizados, el grado de relevancia personal asignado al comportamiento ético en el contexto laboral y la etapa de desarrollo moral en la que suelen ubicar a “los otros”. La tipología del estudio fue exploratoria y descriptiva, el enfoque teórico transdisciplinario, la naturaleza temporal sincrónica. El muestreo no probabilístico incluyó sujetos voluntarios que respondieron un cuestionario disponible online. Las motivaciones laborales de 423 trabajadores latinoamericanos, de diversos niveles jerárquicos, en empresas productivas y de servicios, revelan que la actitud general frente al trabajo es central. Las técnicas de análisis estadísticos revelan que priorizan primero el salario, luego la seguridad, muy cerca figuran las oportunidades de avance y poseer un trabajo interesante; en menor nivel de importancia aparecen las motivaciones sociales y el prestigio. La mayoría de las personas afirman tener interés en oponerse a situaciones inmorales; sin embargo, al indagar las etapas de desarrollo de “los otros”, prevalece que la sociedad rige sus comportamientos éticos según premios o castigos, o imitando a otros, minimizando el respeto por los derechos ajenos o principios propios.
