On the origin of aurorae on Mars

Abstract: We report observations by Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) of thousands of peaked electron energy spectra similar to terrestrial auroral electrons. They are observed on the Martian nightside, near strong crustal magnetic sources. The spectra have peak energies ranging from 100 eV – 2.5 keV, and fluxes near the peak are 10–10000 times higher than typical nightside spectra. They occur on magnetic field lines that connect the shocked solar wind to crustal magnetic fields, and on adjacent closed field lines. Their detec… Show more

“…1 shows our input electron spectrogram. These data were observed by MGS on 21 April 2001 and have been reported in more detail by Brain et al (2006). From 02:10 to 02:30 UT, MGS was at an altitude of about nearly 400 km at a local time of 02 on the night side.…”

“…Brain et al (2006a) have observed a clear relationship between the occurrence of peaked electron distributions at the altitude of ∼400 km and the crustal fields. They have also shown that the IMF orientation strongly affects whether these electrons are observed.…”

“…Peaked electron distributions on Mars were observed at different altitudes on MGS and MEX (Brain et al, 2006a;Lundin et al, 2006). Analogy with inverted V structures in the Earth magnetosphere raised the questions whether aurora on Mars exist and whether there are significant field-aligned electric potential drops on the crustal field lines.…”

“…Bulk escape processes associated with Martian crustal fields (Brain et al 2006), trans-terminator flows (Fraenz et al 2010), shear flows at boundaries (Penz et al 2004), and the Martian magnetotail (Dubinin et al 1993;Fedorov et al 2006) may provide significant ion loss. Bulk escape may be the primary source of plasma into the Martian plasma sheet, whereas ambipolar fields may be the primary driver for polar wind outflows of protons into the tail lobes (Dubinin et al 2011) and from other regions magnetically 'open' to interplanetary space.…”
