MAVEN SupraThermal and Thermal Ion Compostion (STATIC) Instrument

Abstract: The MAVEN SupraThermal And Thermal Ion Compostion (STATIC) instrument is designed to measure the ion composition and distribution function of the cold Martian ionosphere, the heated suprathermal tail of this plasma in the upper ionosphere, and the pickup ions accelerated by solar wind electric fields. STATIC operates over an energy range of 0.1 eV up to 30 keV, with a base time resolution of 4 seconds. The instrument consists of a toroidal "top hat" electrostatic analyzer with a 360• × 90• field-of-view, combi… Show more

“…Composition measurements (not shown) from the STATIC instrument [McFadden et al, 2015] indicate that these ions are protons, consistent with the reconverted solar wind hydrogen ENAs described above. Figure 1 shows observations from two representative orbits by the Solar Wind Ion Analyzer instrument [Halekas et al, 2013], with supporting information from the magnetometer instrument [Connerney et al, 2015].…”

“…The PFP (Fig. 5) services the Solar Wind Electron Analyzer (SWEA) instrument (Mitchell et al 2014), the Solar Wind Ion Analyzer (SWIA) instrument , the Langmuir Probe and Waves (LPW) instrument (Andersson et al 2015), the Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) instrument, the Solar Energetic Particles (SEP) instrument, and the SuperThermal And Thermal Ion Composition (STATIC) instrument (McFadden et al 2015) in addition to the Magnetometer instrumentation (MAG). The MAVEN magnetic field investigation (MAG) consists of two independent and identical fluxgate magnetometer systems that are interfaced to and controlled by the PFDPU.…”

“…The NGIMS instrument has measured the ion and neutral densities in equation (8). The ion temperatures and the major ion densities are measured by the Supra-Thermal and Thermal Ion Composition instrument [McFadden et al, 2015].
