On the Melting Process of the Phase Change Material in Horizontal Rectangular Enclosures

Abstract: Phase change material (PCM) is one of the most important ways to store and manage energy. The melting process of PCM in a rectangular enclosure with the different aspect ratio is frequently related to some thermal energy storage devices. In this work, the melting of PCM in the horizontal rectangular enclosures heated from the different sides and the influence of aspect ratio of the rectangle are carefully studied. The enthalpy porosity technique and the finite volume method (FVM) are used to simulate the melti… Show more

“…2013; Duan et al. 2019), and is denoted as the ratio of the total heat transfer rate per unit length to the conductive heat transfer rate per unit length, as the corresponding dimensions of both numerator and denominator are W m. Dividing both the numerator and the denominator by , the present definition can be converted to the standard definition as in Shishkina (2016), where is the ratio between the average horizontal heat flux and the conductive heat flux.…”

“…The thermal-flow behaviour in the PCM and flowing air can be described by a standard set of equations [42,43] and for the three-dimensional case, comes down to solutions of Partial Differential Equations, (PDEs), which include a mass, a momentum, and an energy equation [44]. In this context, for solving the set of equations, one of the most frequently used numerical methods, called the Finite Volume Method (FVM), [45,46] was applied.…”

“…Their conclusions evidenced that the heat source location can significantly affect the heat transfer process of PCM. Duan et al [15] appraised the heat transfer process of PCM in rectangular containers with three aspect ratios under constant temperature boundary conditions, which provided a theoretical basis for the container designs. Kamkari [16][17][18] investigated the heat transfer process of PCM under constant temperature boundary conditions by numerical calculation and experiment verification.…”
