Many innovative products with multi-functions and of excellent quality are being manufactured. Although new ideas, concepts and innovations emerge, products with higher properties remain the market's favourite. Therefore, in this research, the material optimization technology for a small structure was developed and evaluated. Some small structures were desired for miniaturizing, weight and energy saving in the products. The concept of "material optimization" is a new and general idea. This material is of the composite type. The material optimization technology regarding Young's modulus, density, coefficient of linear expansion, specific heat and thermal conductivity were the main consideration of this research. The calculation models for the properties were discussed first and presented. The manufacturing method for a small structure with the desired properties was then developed. The small structure with the material optimization was manufactured and evaluated. It is concluded from the research that the technology was very effective and useful for the development of a new composite material with several hybrid properties.

In recent years, the demand for products of high quality, with hybrid properties, multifunctional, low cost and which is environmentally-friendly has been rapidly increasing. Here, several optimization technologies are currently being used to address these issues. Particularly, topology optimization technology is considered useful in the manufacturing field due to the high quality, high reliability and safety that it offers. However, it has been observed that there is a lack of proper material optimization techniques in the technology development process. There are hundreds of materials used in the industrial field but, surprisingly, there is a minimal amount of research regarding material property optimization for innovative developments. Thus, the present research, through a previously developed software, defined a material optimization technology for innovation. This technology relied on a software that creates new materials with hybrid properties, a hybrid materials manufacturing method, and an algorithm for material optimization. The material optimization technology was then evaluated. It is concluded from the results that: (1) the expanded proposed software was suitable for calculating the Young's modulus, density, coefficient of linear expansion, specific heat and thermal conductivity for several properties; and (2) the material optimization technology was effective for the development of innovative products with defined functions or properties.

Since the beginning of the 21 st century, the importance to manufacture products that involve highquality, hybrid properties, multi-functionality, low-cost, and environmentally-friendly characteristics has been highlighted in the development of new ideas and technologies. Therefore, given that the development of new materials has been following the same trend, a software for the creation of new materials with hybrid properties was developed and evaluated. The developed software involved and calculated several properties, such as density, Young's modulus, coefficient of linear expansion, specific heat and thermal conductivity. This software was composed of the following two functions:(1) the calculation of the combination and ratio of constituent materials to create a composite material that achieves certain desired properties, and (2) the calculation of the properties shown by the generated composite material based on the combination and ratio of its constituent materials. Subsequently, a three-dimensional functional gradient material (FGM) was manufactured and evaluated based on the developed software. It was concluded from the evaluation that; (1) the proposed software was able to calculate properties such as density, Young's modulus, coefficient of linear expansion, specific heat and thermal conductivity; (2) the software was useful for the development of a three-dimensional functional gradient material.
