On the Holocene evolution of the Ayeyawady megadelta

Abstract: Abstract. The Ayeyawady delta is the last Asian megadelta whose evolution has remained essentially unexplored so far. Unlike most other deltas across the world, the Ayeyawady has not yet been affected by dam construction, providing a unique view on largely natural deltaic processes benefiting from abundant sediment loads affected by tectonics and monsoon hydroclimate. To alleviate the information gap and provide a baseline for future work, here we provide a first model for the Holocene development of this mega… Show more

“…Myanmar basin since Oligocene with the youngest developing since about 9,000 years ago (Giosan et al, 2018), but the comparatively sediment-poor Salween discharges directly into the Gulf of Martaban (e.g., Robinson et al, 2014). Suspended sediment influx from these rivers is transported directly or by resuspension from the continental shelves of Myanmar and Thailand to our core locations mainly via summer monsoon currents (Rao et al, 2005).…”

“…The quartz OSL signal is dominated by the fast component and the average dose recovery ratio is 1.00 ± 0.02 (four samples, 11-Earth Surf. Dynam., 6, 451- 466,2018 www.earth-surf-dynam.net/6/451/2018/ 12 aliquots per sample), suggesting that our quartz De values measured using SAR are reliable. One prerequisite for accurate age estimation is that the quartz OSL signal was sufficiently bleached prior to burial in the sediment sequence.…”

“…Sediment Nd isotope values from potential sources are shown along the y-axis for the Ayeyarwady (Irrawaddy) (Allen et al, 2008a;Giosan et al, 2018), for the Andaman Islands (Ali et al, 2015), and for the Ganga-Brahmaputra (Singh and France-Lanord, 2002 and the references therein). Note the one Irrawaddy value from Colin et al (1999), which has no location information, is less radiogenic than the other Ayeyarwady samples and is more similar to the Yangon or Sittaung rivers located nearby (Giosan et al, 2018). The mixing line between Indonesian throughflow waters (IW) with Ganga-Brahmaputra low salinity surface water (GB) employs the end members from Amakawa et al (2000) and Singh et al (2012).…”
