On the history and definition of Preiser’s disease

Abstract: In 1910, Georg Preiser (1876-1913) described five cases of rarifying osteitis. Based on his imaging studies, he diagnosed post-traumatic avascular necrosis (AVN) of the scaphoid without any sign of primary fracture. This was followed by an article in 1911 in which Preiser related his findings to Kienböck's disease and Köhler's disease of the tarsal navicular. Upon searching the literature, we found descriptions and discussions of Preiser's imaging; however, the original images have never been published. We rep… Show more

“…In 44% the cause remained unknown. Recently, the previously unpublished images of Preiser’s original article on idiopathic AVN of the scaphoid were re-evaluated (Kallen and Strackee, 2014; Preiser, 1910). All five cases presented by Preiser showed a fracture in the scaphoid.…”

“…Preiser disease is characterised by avascular necrosis of the scaphoid [ 1 ]. The pathology is controversial [ 2 ], although, patients typically complain of wrist pain and limitation of wrist motion. Plain radiographs showed scaphoid sclerosis without visible fracture, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated abnormal intensity in the scaphoid [ 1 ].…”

“…[1] As a retrospective review of his original 1910 article points out, in all 5 of his cases there was a fracture of the scaphoid. [2] Despite this, the term Preiser's Disease has become synonymous with AVN of the scaphoid without previous fracture.…”
