On the formation of higher aliphatic ketones in the thermal decomposition of fat

Abstract: It is shown, that on heating fats at temperatures ranging from 200° to 350°, especially in the presence of catalysts like iron, higher aliphatic ketones are formed by the interaction of pairs of fatty acid molecules. In the case of coconut oil, one of these ketones has been isolated and proved to be the hitherto unknown n‐12‐pentacosanone.
