On the ferromagnetic structure of the intermetallic borocarbide TbCo2B2C

Abstract: Based on magnetization, specific heat, magnetostriction and neutron-diffraction studies on single-crystal TbCo(2)B(2)C, it is found out that the paramagnetic properties, down to liquid nitrogen temperatures, are well described by a Curie-Weiss behavior of the Tb(3+) moments. Furthermore, below T(c) = 6.3 K, the Tb sublattice undergoes a ferromagnetic (FM) phase transition with the easy axis being along the (100) direction and, concomitantly, the unit cell undergoes a tetragonal-to-orthorhombic distortion. The … Show more

“…The Ce compound again violates the monotonic dependencies due to a deviation from the trivalent state. A distortion of the tetragonal unit cell to an orthorhombic metric by magnetostriction for TbCo 2 [B 2 C] below the Curie temperature of 6.3 K was already pointed out above [138].…”

“…10,12,17,18 Powder neutrondiffractograms were collected at the high resolution powder diffractometer D2B of the Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL), France (λ = 1.6Å, T = 1.5K and 30K), and were analyzed by the same Rietveld package. The diffractograms of the end members were not measured since these have already been determined.…”

“…The diffractograms of the end members were not measured since these have already been determined. 10,12,19 Magnetizations and susceptibilities (2K < T < 20K and H ≤ 90 kOe) were measured on a Physical Properties Measurement System of Quantum Design; specific heat curves (1.8K < T < 40K and H = 0, 30 kOe) were measured on a relaxation-type calorimeter using the same environment as that used for the magnetization measurements. The results obtained from these thermodynamic techniques (which will appear elsewhere 20 ) provide independent confirmation of the picture to be discussed below.…”
