On the arrangement of the superficial veins of the cubital fossa in American white and American negro males

Abstract: ONE FIGUREThe frequent variation in the arrangement of the superficial veins of the cubital fossa has been recognized by both anatomists and clinicians. The arrangement of these veins may be studied by dissection or by placing a tourniquet around the arm of an individual and then observing the pattern resulting as the veins become engorged. The latter method has been employed by Berry and Newton ('08) in British (whites), by Lassila ('27) in Finns, and by Okamoto ('22) in the Japanese. The patterns shown in th… Show more

“…It is, to some extent, comparable to the findings in British whites (53%) [Berry and Newton, 1908] and in American white and black subjects (70%) [Charles, 1932]. However, the incidence of this pattern is very high in Japanese (84%) [Okamoto, 1922] and very low in Indian subjetcs (6%) [Tewariet al, 1971], The sec ond most commonest pattern in Nigerians (24-30%) is also in the range of the findings in Americans (27%) [Charles, 1932] and Britishers (16%) [Barry and Newton, 1908]. However, this pattern is very high in Indians (70.0%) [Tewariet al, 1971] and extremely low in Japanese (1%) [Okamoto, 1922].…”

“…The median cubital vein joins both of them arising from the cephalic vein a few centimeters below the elbow and joining the basilic a few centimeters above the elbow joint. In some cases a median vein of the forearm is present which either joins the median cubital or divides below the elbow into two branches, one joining the basilic vein and the other joining the cephalic vein [Schaffer, 1933;Brash, 1953;Davies, 1973;McGregor and Plessis, 1969], A number of patterns with varying frequencies have been reported in white British subjects [Berry and Newton, 1908], in Japanese [Okamoto, 1922], in American whites and Negroes [Charles, 1932] and in Indians [Tewariet al, 1971], However, no report is found on record from the African continent. The aim of the present investigation is to document the findings in Nigerian subjects.…”
