On Surface Losses in Direct Metal Laser Sintering Printed Millimeter and Submillimeter Waveguides

Abstract: Different lengths of WR3 (220-330 GHz) and waveguides are fabricated through direct metal laser sintering (DMLS). The losses in these waveguides are measured and modelled using the Huray surface roughness model. The losses in WR3 are around 0.3 dB/mm and in WR10 0.05 dB/mm. The Huray equation model is accounting relatively good for the attenuation in the WR10 waveguide but deviates more in the WR3 waveguide. The model is compared to finite element simulations of the losses assuming an approximate surface stru… Show more

“…[20] provides a basis for the synthesis of efficient mm-wave metasurfaces, several challenges in the circuit board design and the experimental characterization remain. At mmwave frequencies, fabrication tolerances [30], the choice of circuit board materials [31], surface roughness [32]- [34] and conductor coatings [35] play an important role.…”

“…It has to be noted that, the terms SLM, LPBF and PBF-LB/M are synonyms and are terminology of AM processes defined in ISO/ASTM 52900 [189]. SLM is the most versatile form of AM and PBF-LB/M processes, and are promising techniques for producing various 3D metallic, polymers and ceramic components [190][191][192][193]. The working principle of SLM involved selective melting of metallic powder on a build platform using a laser beam.…”

“…Besides the well-known fabrication challenges, they have higher sensitivity to power loss compared to their microwave counterparts [71]. For instance, it has been shown in [72] that losses introduced by conductor irregularity could significantly impact the energy harvesting potential of a mmWave metasurface. Thus, further research is required to address these challenges.…”
