On Sensor Security in the Era of IoT and CPS

Abstract: Sensors play an integral role in numerous devices across a diverse range of domains. While cyber-physical systems and the Internet of things use them extensively, sensors can also be commonly found in many standalone electronic devices. Concerns over the susceptibility of sensors to malicious attacks have led academia to focus on the security of these sensors. To help unite these efforts, we propose a lexicon to easily differentiate between types and methods of attacks on sensors. Using these definitions, one … Show more

“…These situations show that adequate safety procedures may not suit the equipment's entire life as security concerns develop. This scenario can cause long-lasting vulnerabilities [90]. This is in contrast to the typical computer system paradigm, which is normally modified over a lifetime via operating software upgrades to cover security vulnerabilities.…”

“…BatiPrint3D is presented in 2017, and a prototype house is built in a matter of days utilizing this innovation. 3D printing technology has been developed to build metal structures for construction projects efficiently, hence lowering the cost and waste produced [90]. The stainless steel 3D printed bridge by MX3D, a robotic metal 3D print technology developer, is an accomplishment for 3D metal printing.…”

“…Since all the data are available in digital form and stored on the cloud (mostly), its privacy and security are always questionable when a third party is involved. Several approaches have been proposed in the recent literature to mitigate the security issues in CPS within smart cities [52,60,119,122,124,129,[131][132][133][134][135][136][137][138][139][140][141][142][143].…”

“…In the era of the industrial revolution 4.0, all digital-based industries involving interactions between humans, machines, data, and everything are now known as the "internet of things" (IoT) and "cyber-physical systems" (CPS) [1]- [3]. The increased demand for precise, effective, and efficient technology and information systems to make it easier to carry out activities in the business, social, and educational sectors has fueled the rapid rise of information technology [4], [5].…”
