On Rationales for Cognitive Values in the Assessment of Scientific Representations

Abstract: Cognitive values like simplicity, broad scope, and easy handling are properties of a scientific representation that result from the idealization which is involved in the construction of a representation. These properties may facilitate the application of epistemic values to credibility assessments, which provides a rationale for assigning an auxiliary function to cognitive values. In this paper, I defend a further rationale for cognitive values which consists in the assessment of the usefulness of a representa… Show more

“…32 Some authors use "epistemic values" for what I call "scientific values" (for instance, (McMullin, 1983), p. 6 and also (Reiss, 2017), p. 135), also the term "cognitive values" is in use (see, e.g., (Douglas, 2013)). (McMullin, 1983), p. 18 calls values that I call instrumental scientific values "pragmatic" values.-For discussion of different subgroups of scientific values and their various functions see (Douglas, 2013), (Hirsch Hadorn, 2018), and(Hirsch Hadorn &Baumberger, 2019). 33 For references acknowledging the first route, see (Carrier, 2022), p. 8, for the second route see ibid., p. 7.…”

“…This model gives a detailed abstraction of cognitive properties in any cognitive intelligent agent such as a human agent. We focus on the value properties [30][31][32], specifically the knowledge property, and introduce its related properties and operations. With respect to this research, we define a cognitive value [31][32][33] as follows:…”
