“…The regulation of septohippocampal cholinergic neurons by catecholamines has been delineated by Robinson, Cheney & Costa, (1981) and Butcher, Woolf, Albanese & Butcher, (1981). Oderfeld-Nowak and Aprison (1981) have presented evidence that those same cholinergic mechanisms are modulated by serotonergic indolamines. The interaction between cholinergic hippocampal neurons and adrenergic mechanisms on the one hand, and cholinergic hippocampal neurons and serotonergic mechanisms on the other, are, however, independent of one another (Ladinsky, Consolo, Tirelli, Forloni & Segal, 1981).…”

“…Interestingly, several tricy-clic antidepressant compounds with structures similar to those of p-carbolines cause even stronger effects on both AChE (Caratsch and Waser, 1973;Michalek, 1973) and muscarinic receptor binding (Snyder and Yamamura, 1977;Bohman et al, 1981), indicating that this tricyclic stereochemistry is even more favourable for the observed effects. The indole ring itself seems to play a role in the structure of the subsite on the enzyme molecule, but not on the muscarinic receptor one, since indole derivatives like serotonin or tryptamine were found to be noncompetitive inhibitors of AChE (Oderfeld-Nowak and Aprison, 1981).…”
