In common with many other materials, paper tends to shrink as it dries. Although every attempt is made to restrain paper, some shrinkage occurs on all paper machines in the direction perpendicular to that of manufacture and this shrinkage is always much higher at the edges of the machine than in the centre. Measurement of the profile of this cross-machine shrinkage is possible using the fast Fourier transform to locate and measure periodic elements imprinted by the filtration fabrics used during the formation of the paper web. This paper describes a new method which allows the geometrical relationships within the fabric to be used along with dimensional changes to estimate shrinkage. The method has the advantages over previous methods of more tolerant sampling protocols, operator independent analysis and improved accuracy.

As the title implies, this paper will discuss papermaking on-line instrumentation, concentrating on sensors for paper quality measurements. The review is intended to explore not just the techniques for measurement, but also the evolution of a particular measurement and the research behind it. On-line instrumentation will be the primary focus, covering not only the usual structural, mechanical and appearance properties of paper but also certain water system measurements around the papermaking thin/thick stock loop. These measurements will include a discussion of the sensors pertaining to “wet end chemistry” and consistency, with their incorporation into retention control schemes. Discussion of off-line, laboratory measurements will be included where pertinent to provide a prediction of future on-line sensor availability. The usual papermaking process measurements such as pH, temperature, level, pressure and flow will not be covered.

Das Flächengewichts-Querprofil ist ein wichtiges Qualitätsmerkmal bei der Erzeugung von Papierbahnen, da es unerwünschte Schwankungen des Flächen-gewichts in der Bahn beschreibt. Diese Schwankungen sollen möglichst gering sein, und daher glättet man sie im allgemeinen mittels einer Querprofilregelung. Für den Entwurf einer solchen Regelung wird ein zeitdiskretes Prozeßmodell mit konzentrierten Parametern benötigt, da die zu regelnde Prozeßgröße, das Flächen-gewichts-Querprofil, nur in Zeitintervallen und als Vektor von Profilwerten gemessen wird. Ein solches Modell wird in diesem Artikel aus der bereits in [1] aufgestellten zeitkontinuierlichen Prozeßbeschreibung mit verteilten Parametern gewonnen. Discrete model for forming the cross-direction basis weight on paper machinesThe cross-direction profile of the paper weight is an important quality feature in manufacturing paperwebs since it depicts undesirable variations of the paper weight across the web. These variations should be as small as possible. Therefore, they are smoothed by means of cross-direction control. To design such a control a discrete-time model with lumped parameters is required since the controlled process value, the cross-direction basis weight, is only measured at periodic intervals and as a vector of cross-direction values. In this article such a model is obtained from a continuous-time process description with distributed Parameters already developed in [1].
