On extending ESnet's OSCARS with a multi-domain anycast service

Abstract: Current scientific data applications require advanced network provisioning systems to support the transport of large volumes of data. Due to the availability of diverse\ud computing and Grid clusters, these applications can benefit from anycasting capabilities. In contrast to unicasting, anycast routing allows the selection of a node from a group of candidate destinations. This new means of communication allows for greater routing flexibility and better network resource consumption.\ud However, current provisi… Show more

“…Similarly, the OSCARS software framework is the one in charge of managing and automating the network operations based on user-specified requirements to provide multi-domain BoD services in the ESnet. OSCARS provides multi-domain, high-bandwidth virtual circuits that guarantee E2E network data transfers [164]. It is based on the PCE-based architecture and it is currently operated over an MPLS network.…”

“…3. This section provides a high-level description of the baseline OSCARS architecture and the circuit request workflow, as well as a summary of the modifications that contributed to the anycast OSCARS deployment presented in [14]. With an understanding of its architecture, circuit-provisioning process, and end user/application interfaces, the reader will have the general knowledge required to understand how our proposed mul- tipath client relies on and interacts with the core OSCARS system in order to perform link-disjoint routing.…”

“…For the purpose of performing anycast routing, the entire set of candidate destinations may be passed in as a collection of optional constraints, and then the modified PCE stack will consider these candidate destinations rather than the traditionally expected single destination passed in by the traditional user constraints. To this end we have proposed and implemented an enhanced PCE stack implementation composed of several new submodules to support anycast communication in our previous work [14]. This subsection summarizes that proposed structure, which must be deployed as an alternative to the default unicastonly PCE stack.…”
