The objective of this work is to design a controller that may maintain the level of a conical tank which has nonlinear dynamics. Because of the nonlinearity present in the dynamics of the plant, the controller parameters have to be dynamic as well, so that the performance of the system may be enhanced. Hence sliding mode controller which is robust is designed with an adaptive mechanism, so that it could cope up with the varying dynamics of the system. In this paper, three different algorithms were used to study the system behaviour by using simulation. These algorithms were also implemented in real time. When its performance was observed in real time, the adaptive sliding mode controller proved to outperform when compared to reaching law and super twisting algorithm based sliding mode controllers.

This paper provides an overview of modern feedback control methods for the voltage regulation in DC/DC converters of DC microgrids. Control objectives and practical restrictions are defined and used as indicators for the analysis and performance assessment of the control methods. After presenting the concept of each control method, the advantages and limitations in the converter applications are discussed. The main conclusions of this overview can be used as recommendations for the selection of the suitable control method according to the control requirements in the DC microgrid. The low robustness against disturbances is a major issue in all control methods. For the enhancement of the robustness of the feedback control methods, three approaches are reviewed. Applications of these approaches in DC/DC converters are compared with regard to the achieved disturbance rejection and the related cost of nominal performance degradation. The disturbance/uncertainty estimation and attenuation (DUEA) framework appears to be the most promising approach to compromising these opposing control objectives. This overview is presented for a general DC/DC converter, without any additional control design requirement imposed by a specific converter plant. This allows the generalisation of the conclusions of the performance assessment, which can facilitate the application of the control methods in similar systems, such as in AC/DC converters or motor drives.

En este trabajo se presenta una panorámica del desarrollo de los métodos básicos de análisis y diseño de controladores y observadores por modos deslizantes de orden superior. Inicialmente se describen los controladores por retroalimentación de estados con una ley de control discontinua, que generan un modo deslizante de cualquier orden. Posteriormente se presenta una nueva clase de algoritmos por modos deslizantes de orden superior, que consisten en una retroalimentación de estados continua y una acción de control integral discontinua. Se describen también observadores por modos deslizantes, que estiman los estados del sistema en tiempo finito, y que permiten obtener un controlador por retroalimentación de la salida. Todos los diseños presentados se basan en el uso de funciones de Lyapunov (explícitas), que constituyen una contribución importante del grupo de trabajo de los autores en la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. La presentación es tutorial y solo se dan los resultados, dejando a un lado la formalización rigurosa y las pruebas matemáticas. Para ello se refiere al lector a la literatura pertinente. Se ilustran los resultados mediante simulaciones y la validación experimental en un sistema de levitación magnética.
