Omicron: a mysterious variant of concern

Abstract: Omicron (B.1.1.529), a highly mutated SARS-CoV-2 variant, has emerged in the south of African continent in the November 2021. The spike protein of Omicron has 26 amino acid mutations, which makes it distinct from the other variants of concern. Researches are underway to know the virulence and transmission rate of Omicron variant. In this letter, the seven-day moving average of most affected Omicron variant countries Denmark, Germany, India, Netherlands, South Africa and UK has been investigated and compared wi… Show more

“…For example, sera from double‐vaccinated individuals and therapeutic candidate monoclonal antibodies showed a reduced neutralizing activity against the Delta variant [ 8 , 9 ]. Here, we use a flow cytometry‐based antibody binding assay with SARS‐CoV‐2 spike‐transfected HEK293 cells and a vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV)‐based pseudotype neutralization assay to analyze whether a third immunization, that is, the second boost vaccination, can increase the serum activity of neutralizing antibodies against the recently emerged and rapidly spreading SARS‐CoV‐2 Omicron variant [ 10 ].…”

“…SARS-COVID-2 has affected the world through multifarious channels, and hence, there have been multitude of studies into it. Ranging from in-depth analysis of the latest variant [ 8 ] to the recurrent waves of infection [ 9 , 10 ] and achieving herd immunity [ 11 ], there have been humongous efforts all across the globe to curb this pandemic. In the absence of a permanent cure, our hope to sustain this infectious catastrophe lies purely on physical distancing, mask practice, robust monitoring, herd immunity, and vaccination.…”
