Omentum a powerful biological source in regenerative surgery

Abstract: The Omentum is a large flat adipose tissue layer nestling on the surface of the intra-peritoneal organs. Besides fat storage, omentum has key biological functions in immune-regulation and tissue regeneration . Omentum biological properties include neovascularization, haemostasis, tissue healing and regeneration and as an in vivo incubator for cells and tissue cultivation. Some of these properties have long been noted in surgical pr… Show more

“…The integrity of the repair may be confirmed by the "tire test' (air insufflation via the nasogastric (NG) tube. The simplest method which has amply stood the test of time is to plug the defect with a convenient frond of omentum which provides the stimulus for fibrin formation and tissue regeneration ( Figure 1C) (27). Cellan-Jones in 1929 (28) suggested omentoplasty without primary closure of the defect to prevent narrowing of the duodenum.…”

“…Even more importantly, the patient's anal function quickly returned to normal after the operation, whereas low rectal cancer patients with anastomotic leakage in the past have experienced a series of symptoms such as increased defecation frequency, urgency, di culty in defecation, and incontinence due to pelvic in ammation, from which recovery is di cult. Other studies have found that the particular biological characteristics of the greater omentum can be used to treat brain injuries, hand trauma, and other defects, and has the ability to repair nerve tissue and promote regeneration (6,29,30). Research on whether the omental pedicle ap reconstruction of the mesorectum in the present study has similar restoration of neurological function as to accelerate the recovery of anal function is still lacking.…”

“…The prevention and treatment of postoperative LARS and other complications have become a global problem. By consulting the previous literature report (5), the author found that the greater omentum has become a natural material for surgeons to repair and reconstruct the damaged tissue (6). As an ideal source of biological tissue, we cut and transplanted the greater omentum ap into the presacral space to make the omentum adhere to the presacral in ammatory site.…”

“…However, they have a very short life span in the tissue if they are injected into a target. In many studies, the omentum has been used to wrap the injured tissue and has been shown to be useful (13). According to the results of a previous study, progression to chronic kidney failure has been shown to slow down after subtotal nephrectomy when omentum was used to cover the kidneys (11).…”
