Omega-3 Fatty Acids and Vitamin D Decrease Plasma T-Tau, GFAP, and UCH-L1 in Experimental Traumatic Brain Injury

Abstract: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) results in neuronal, axonal and glial damage. Interventions targeting neuroinflammation to enhance recovery from TBI are needed. Exercise is known to improve cognitive function in TBI patients. Omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin D reportedly reduce inflammation, and in combination, might improve TBI outcomes. This study examined how an anti-inflammatory diet affected plasma TBI biomarkers, voluntary exercise and behaviors following exposure to mild TBI (mTBI). Adult, male rats were in… Show more

“…VitD has also been examined as a late-stage therapy for stroke, with conflicting outcomes despite high-quality data [97]. VitD and VitD binding protein have been discussed as potential biomarkers in patients with stroke [98], MS [99], AD [100], glioblastoma [101], traumatic brain injury [102], and meningitis [103].…”

“…Microalgae are autotrophic due to them performing photosynthesis and are found in a variety of places [ 94 ]. Macroalgae can be used to produce a large quantity of biomolecules with various physiological functions, which has drawn the attention of researchers in food, nutrition, biotech, and pharmacology [ 95 ]. Proteins, carotenoids, polysaccharides, PUFAs, vitamins, and color pigments for food processing, etc., can be extracted from microalgae.…”

“…Studies on different animal models of neuroinflammation report that vitamin D plays an important neuroprotective role against this inflammatory process [87] , [88] , [89] , [90] , some showing that adequate sun exposure may confer beneficial immunomodulatory effects against established multiple sclerosis [83] , [91] . Likewise, a combination of omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin D has also been shown to modulate neuroinflammatory processes in an animal model of traumatic brain injury [92] , thus underscoring the potential of vitamin D-based treatments against encephalopathies caused by SARS-CoV-2.…”
