ABSTRACT. Detachment of coffee fruit is usually accomplished by means of mechanical impacts and vibrations applied to the plant. Modal properties of the coffee fruit-stem system represent important information for efficient and selective harvesting. This study aimed to determine the modal parameters of the coffee fruit-stem system, such as natural frequency and damping coefficient, using high speed digital videos. With image processing techniques, it was obtained the resulting displacement of the system subjected to an impulse. The modal parameters were determined by the logarithmic decrement method, considering the system as underdamped. The use of high-speed video and digital image processing techniques allowed the simple and reliable determination of modal parameters of the coffee fruit-stem system. Natural frequencies for the coffee fruit-stem system were 11.62 and 13.29 Hz; the damping coefficient was 0.0253 and 0.029 N s m -1, and the equivalent stiffness was 8.61 and 7.09 N m -1 for red and green ripening stages, respectively. It was found overlap of resonance bands, between the ripening stages red and green, hindering the selective mechanical detachment in the first natural frequency range of the coffee fruit-stem system. A derriça dos frutos do cafeeiro é comumente realizada por meio de impactos e vibrações mecânicas aplicadas à planta. Propriedades modais do sistema fruto-pedúnculo do café são informações importantes para uma derriça eficiente e seletiva. Objetivou-se determinar os parâmetros modais do sistema fruto-pedúnculo do café, tais como frequência natural e coeficiente de amortecimento, empregando-se vídeos digitais de alta velocidade. Por meio de técnicas de processamento de imagens foi obtido o deslocamento resultante do sistema submetido a um impulso. A partir do método do decremento logarítmico foram obtidos os parâmetros modais, idealizando o sistema como subamortecido. A utilização de vídeos de alta velocidade e técnicas de processamento de imagens digitais permitiu a determinação dos parâmetros modais do sistema fruto-pedúnculo do café de forma simples e confiável. As frequências naturais do sistema foram de 11,62 e 13,29 Hz; os coeficientes de amortecimento foi de 0,029 e 0,0253 N s m -1 e a rigidez equivalente foi de 8,61 e 7,09 N m -1 para os estádios de maturação cereja e verde, respectivamente. Houve sobreposição de faixas de ressonância entre os estádios de maturação cereja e verde, dificultando a derriça mecânica seletiva do café na faixa da primeira frequência natural.Palavras-chave: segmentação de imagem, colheita mecanizada, vibrações mecânicas.

RESUMOParâmetros de qualidade podem alterar significativamente o preço do café; entretanto, a colheita seletiva dos frutos é frequentemente associada à boa qualidade do produto, procedimento que pode ser realizado por meio de vibrações mecânicas. Desta forma, o estudo e a avaliação do efeito localizado de fatores como frequência, amplitude e grau de maturação dos frutos, são fundamentais para construção de máquinas adequadas a este tipo de prática. O trabalho foi desenvolvido com o objetivo de se avaliar os fatores frequência, amplitude, grau de maturação, direção de excitação e número de frutos por pedúnculo, na eficiência de derriça. Para a realização dos ensaios de vibração em laboratório utilizou-se uma máquina vibradora eletromagnética. Amplitudes na faixa de 3,75 a 7,50 mm e frequências na faixa de 13,33 a 26,67 Hz foram testadas para a variedade Mundo Novo, em que os resultados mostraram que a frequência de 26,67 Hz apresentou uma eficiência maior de derriça para os frutos cereja e a amplitude de 7,5 mm indicou maior eficiência de derriça. Verificou-se, também, que o número de frutos por pedúnculo influencia a eficiência de derriça dos frutos de café da variedade Mundo Novo. However, selective coffee harvesting is frequently associated to good quality of this product. This procedure can be performed by mechanical vibration. Therefore, the study of the frequency and amplitude parameters is important for the design of a specific harvesting machine. The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of the frequency and amplitude of vibration, the coffee variety and the ripeness condition of the fruits upon the harvesting efficiency. The vibration tests were done in laboratory using an electromagnetic shaker. The tests were done using amplitudes in the range of 3.75 to 7.50 mm and frequencies in the range of 13.33 to 16.67 Hz. Branches of coffee plants of Mundo Novo variety were tested. The highest harvesting efficiency was obtained when using the 26.67 Hz frequency of vibration. The highest harvesting efficiency was obtained when an amplitude of 7.5 mm was used. It was also observed that the number of fruits per stem influences the harvesting efficiency of the coffee fruits of the Mundo Novo variety.

The development of efficient machines for the mechanical harvesting of coffee plants requires the use of appropriate vibrational parameters. Thus, in order to detach less unripe fruits and decrease reharvesting, branch breakage and defoliation, it is important to choose the appropriate frequency, amplitude and vibration time. This study aimed at analyzing the detachment efficiency of fruits from coffee plants according to vibrational parameters and ripening stage. Fruit bunches were sampled at the green and mature stages and subjected to vibration, using a system composed by a signal generator, an amplifier and an electromagnetic vibrating machine. Tests combined different frequencies (16.4 Hz, 20.3 Hz, 24 Hz, 25.6 Hz, 30.0 Hz and 33.0 Hz), amplitudes (5.0 mm, 7.0 mm and 9.0 mm) and vibration times (10.0 s and 20.0 s). The vibration times did not affect the detachment efficiency. There was a trend for higher detachment efficiency in mature fruits than in green fruits. The detachment efficiency increased with increasing vibration frequency and amplitude.
