Abstract:We report on Eocene ostracode species from Hokkaido, northern Japan for the first time and discuss their paleobiogeographic implications. Five species were found in the lower part of the Sankebetsu Formation in the Haboro area, and the Akabira and Ashibetsu Formations in the Yubari area, central Hokkaido. The ostracode assemblages are characterized by Robertsonites, a circumpolar Arctic genus of the modern fauna. This finding marks the southernmost occurrence of the Eocene record of the genus, as well as the oldest occurrence. As the characteristics of the Eocene Hokkaido fauna are similar to those of the modern-day fauna in the Seto Inland Sea, a contrast in species composition is observed between the Seto Inland Sea and Kyushu. This contrast is attributable to differences in sea temperature. These strata yield the Ishikarian molluscan fauna, indicating a Middle Eocene age (Mizuno, 1964). This age assignment is supported by fission track dating of the underlying Yubari and Wakkanabe Formations (ca. 44-42 Ma;Tanai, 1986) and the ages of calcareous nannofossils in the overlying Poronai Formation (late Middle Eocene; Okada and Kaiho, 1992). Poronai Formation (Middle-Upper Eocene)The Poronai Formation, which overlies the Ishikari Group in the Sorachi and Ishikari areas, is dominantly mudstone, and has a thickness of 600 m. Three living trachyleberidid ostracod species, Acanthocythereis munechikai Ishizaki, Actinocythereis kisarazuensis Yajima and Hirsutocythere hanaii Ishizaki, were discovered in the Tsushima Straits, c. 120 km east of Tsushima Island (north Island), N 34( 46# E 130( 46# at a depth of 116 m. Early Miocene marine ostracodes from southwestern India: implications for their biogeography and the closure of the Tethyan Seaway

Twenty-six genera and 34 species of early Miocene Indian shallow-marine ostracodes were examined for taxonomy and paleobiogeography. A new genus Paractinocythereis and new species Costa ponticulocarinata were described. Early Miocene Indian ostracode fauna shows strong affinity to Eocene–Miocene Eastern and Western Tethyan ostracode faunas and Miocene–Recent Indo-Pacific ostracode fauna, supporting the Hopping Hotspot Hypothesis that the Tethyan biodiversity hotspot has shifted eastward through Arabia to Indo-Australian Archipelago (IAA) together with concomitant biogeographic shifts of the Tethyan elements. The result also indicated an inverse westward distributional shift in a genus. It is important to note that Paleogene and Miocene shallow marine ostracodes from the IAA region remain poorly investigated, and more fossil ostracode data are needed to better test the Hopping Hotspot Hypothesis.UUID: http://zoobank.org/d1e29249-8c5b-49bf-a47a-5f18e1fc4426
