Olfactory enrichment using a maternal pheromone improved post-weaning pig performance and behavior

Abstract: The post-weaning environment in commercial pig nursery buildings is typically devoid of both the sow and her semiochemicals. Among other factors, the loss of maternal odors may contribute to post-weaning stress. In this work, we report four studies (studies 1-4) using 192 weaned pigs to evaluate the effects of a maternal pheromone (MP) containing Myristic Acid and Skatole on weaned pig behavior and performance. Study 1 examined behavior among weaned pigs with a focus on lying, aggression and feeding behaviors.… Show more

“…[51] obtained an ADG of 0.401 kg/day in piglets between 29 and 70 days of age. The growth rate is determined by a large number of factors, among which are weaning age [12,51], BW at weaning [52], genetics, facilities [53,54] or management [50].…”

“…Pheromones are also involved in stress regulation mechanisms in mammals. Therefore, pheromones may be able to reduce male aggressiveness when species are reintroduced to native habitats (Archer et al, 2022).…”

“…Moreover, pheromones are also strongly involved in the control of stress regulation mechanisms in mammals. Therefore, they could be used at the time of reintroduction of specimens in order to appease the aggressiveness of males (Archer et al, 2022).…”
