Oleogel: A promising base for transdermal formulations

Abstract: S ince last two decades the work on oleogels is being exploited in pharmaceutical, cosmetics, and nutraceutical industries for their desired rheological, physical, and chemical stabilities in semisolid formulations. Recently, we had developed a stable and efficacious oleogel containing diclofenac diethylamine for topical application. The present review article deals with the literature of oleogels including its application in various fields from last few decades till date. The literature reveals that the oleog… Show more

“…EC‐structured oleogels have recently shown a wide range of applications, for instance, substituting fat in meat products, preventing oil migration in foods, preventing water loss in cosmetics, or as green lubricants . Previous studies have demonstrated the ability to alter EC oleogel properties using different strategies .…”

“…Thyme essential oil is convenient to insert in oil medium; therefore a lipophilic gel was formulated. Technology process of oleogels is simple; system does not contain water; its physical, microbiological, and chemical stability is much more as compared to conventional topical bases; the lipids of oleogels support skin hydration by reducing transepidermal water loss [ 21 ]. Despite the convenience of technology, the amount of thymol decreased by 30% and it can be related to the compound volatility or other investigation aspects in future.…”

“…Lipophilic gels are popular in the pharmaceutical industry for simple production technology, long-term stability, and new wide range of gelators. In comparison with emulsions, oleogels have better viscosity and spreadability; the high lipid content of the products causes an optimal reduction of any skin roughness, beneficial for skin protection purposes [ 21 ].…”

“…68 Recently, oleogels were identied as excellent candidates for biomedical applications because of their good physical, chemical and mechanical stability. [69][70][71] Keeping all these aspects in mind, we intended to further explore the use of oleogel and composite gel in tissue regeneration, exclusively in wound exudates, broblast proliferation, secretion of ground substance, keratinocyte migration and neoangiogenesis, which are necessary for complete epithelialization and healing of the wound. The wound is protected from microbial infection on covering with the oleogels and also, bioactive molecules can be transported to the wound site.…”
