Older Men Living with Spouse and Older Women Living with Spouse and Children Have Lower Frailty Prevalence: The Korean Frailty and Aging Cohort Study (KFACS)

Abstract: The most common index is the frailty phenotype by Fried et al., 5) which defined frailty as the presence of three or more of the following five components: self-reported exhaustion, decreased grip strength, slow walking speed, low physical activity, and unintended weight loss. 5) It is important to define frailty based on physical and social determinants for the early detection of people at a high risk of frailty, as well as for prevention of frailty. 6) Statistics Korea reported that 34.2% of individuals aged… Show more

“…Frailty status was assessed by the Cardiovascular Health Study frailty phenotype criteria [ 23 , 24 ]. The frailty phenotype evaluated five domains: (1) exhaustion (poor endurance, a feeling that everything is an effort or moderate inability to get going for most of the time during the last week) [ 16 ]; (2) low activity level (lowest 20th percentile of physical activity according to the Korean version of the International Physical Activity Questionnaires Short Form [ 25 ]); (3) slowness (usual gait speed < 0.8 m/s in the 4-m walking test); (4) weakness (dominant hand grip strength < 26 kg for men and < 17 kg for women); and (5) weight loss (unintentional weight loss > 3 kg in the past 6 months) [ 26 ].…”

“…Besides people’s wishes concerning their POD, medical factors, including symptom control, 12 ) availability of multidisciplinary home palliative care 13 ) or home care support medical service, 14 ) and cancer as opposed to other diagnoses, 4 ) also influence whether or not people can end their lives at home. Additional to medical factors are social factors, such as living alone, 15 ) having caregiver support, 16 ) and caregivers’ coping skills or educational attainment. 17 ) Although some studies have evaluated factors affecting POD, they have limitations.…”

“…Differences have also been indicated between those living with partners and those living with children, other family members or friends (Hank and Wagner 2013;Kim and Fredrikssen-Goldsen 2014;Shim et al 2020). It is also important to consider reverse causality when considering the link between cohabitation and health outcomes; particularly in Western societies, older adults may only move in with relatives once they cannot manage living alone (Michael et al 2001).…”
