The ability of marine invertebrate larvae to delay their metamorphosis in the absence of adequate environmental cues has been reported for numerous sedentary and sessile species. In the present study, the effect of various substrata and the presence of conspecific adults on the metamorphosis of a mobile species, the crab Chasmagnathus granulata, was evaluated. The duration of the megalopa stage in experiments with six different substrata and in the presence or absence of conspecific adults was compared in a laboratory study. In addition, the influence of natural substrata was compared with that of artificial substrata of similar grain size or texture. In a further experiment, the two most effective cues (natural mud and conspecific adults) were tested as single vs. combined factors. Natural mud and unidentified chemical cues from conspecific adults had the strongest accelerating effects on development duration to metamorphosis. With the exception of nylon threads (artificial filamentous substratum), none of the artificial substrata had a significant effect on the duration of the megalopa stage. Simultaneous exposure to natural mud and water containing chemical cues from conspecific adults accelerated metamorphosis more than each of these factors separately. Megalopae that were reared without a substratum (control) delayed their metamorphosis by 29% (about 3 days) compared with those in simultaneous contact with natural mud and rearing water of adult conspecifics. The results indicate that the metamorphosis of the megalopa of C. granulata is influenced by the presence or absence of environmental stimuli that are associated with the preferred adult habitat.

Artificial benthic collectors have been widely used for the assessment of settlement rates of decapod crustaceans. However, to date no consistent works have addressed spatial patterns of settlement in different estuarine habitats, and no specific studies targeted the interaction of artificial surfaces with the surrounding natural substrate. It may be expected that the artificial surface may produce a different thigmotactic response when compared to the natural substrate, which may limit the use of this technique for assessment of natural settlement rates. In this study the settlement rates of megalopae of the estuarine crab Carcinus maenas were addressed, specifically deploying artificial benthic collectors in different habitats both intertidal and subtidal in the lower Mira estuary. A number of experiments were performed concerning stratification and temporal fluctuations of settlement. Further, the interaction of collector surface with the surrounding substrate was investigated, by comparing settlement rates in natural and artificial substrates in different habitats. Results have shown significant differences in settlement between different estuarine habitats, both in spatially replicated experiments and in a high-resolution temporal experiment. However, comparison between settlement rates in artificial and natural substrates has shown that there is a strong interference between collectors and surrounding substrate, limiting interpretation of results concerning settlement rates in artificial substrate alone.

Most intertidal brachyurans produce planktonic larvae which develop pelagically and, after a certain time in the ocean, migrate towards the habitats that they will eventually settle in. One of the main physical processes affecting larval release and settlement in species inhabiting estuaries and mangroves is the tidal regime. In this study, we investigated whether patterns of settlement of brachyuran larvae at four sites (differing in tidal inundation and crab zonation) of a Kenyan mangrove were affected by the diurnal and lunar cycle of the tide. We collected megalopae at the four sites twice a day throughout two lunar months. Settlement differed at the four sites: at the subtidal site (the main creek within the forest) megalopae arrived during diurnal and nocturnal neap and spring tides, while at the three sites within the forest settlement occurred only at spring tide periods. Specific differences among these latter sites existed in terms of full versus new moon spring tides and, to a smaller extent, with diurnal period. Our results show that larval settlement in mangrove forests takes place at both landward and seaward belts and is a temporally complex event, driven by tidal cycles, but also in synergy with other factors.
